Motivating Words to Travel By
This quote by Anthony Bourdain goes deep into the true spirit of travel “Travel isn’t always pretty. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s OK. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” Anthony Bourdain, travel documentarian
T.S. Elliot hits upon the essence of exploration–the newness of each experience.
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time
T. S. Eliot, poet

The San Diego Union Tribune did a article on Bea Roberts’ collection, her art, and her zest for travel.
“Our philosophy on travel is that you never get any younger, and it never gets cheaper so you might as well go. When we worked, we worked like hell, and when we travel, we travel like hell.” Bea Roberts: Art collector, artist and jewelry maker, Carlsbad, CA

I always thought my son Nick coined this. He certainly has had many “adventures.” It’s true that our memories go deeper when there’s drama involved.

Overheard on the Dalkey, Ireland beach. Several small boys had just exited a cave and the leader shouted this. Must be said with an Irish brogue! Roll the “r” in exploring’. Now it’s my mantra.
“Let’s keep explorin”” Irish lad

This quote sums up perfectly the process that occurs when you’ve finally got the “lay of the land” in a new locale. You become the local when you start helping the newbies.
“It was lonely for a day or so until one morning some man, more recently arrived than I, stopped me on the road. “How do you get to West Egg village?” he asked helplessly. I told him. And as I walked on I was lonely no longer. I was a guide, a pathfinder, an original settler. He had casually conferred on me the freedom of the neighborhood.” F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

This quote spoke to me. I really don’t think travel should be a checkoff list.
“Travel for the love of conquest and you may be disappointed, but travel for the love of people and you won’t be.” Jason Cochran, travel writer

I love this Rick Steves quote! “Travel wallops your ethnocentricity and carbonates your experience and rearranges your cultural furniture.”
Mark Twain is one of my favorite writers and I love this quote. Truer words were never spoken.
“I have found out that there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.”
There are so many more! I’ve love to hear your favorites, and maybe add in the “why”.
These quotes stick with you. Thanks for finding them. Especially profound the lengthy one by Anthony B. I look forward to adding to this….
Thanks! I look forward to adding yours to the list.
I’ve read “The Great Gatsby” more times than I can count, but you discovered a place of beauty in the novel I’d overlooked. I love the phrase “freedom of the neighborhood” and the idea of Gatsby as a guide, which is what we all become when we feel we truly know a place.
Thanks!
Good inspiring stuff P!
Thanks!
