Ljubljana, Slovenia

(Ignore those J’s!) Loo-blee-aa-nuh

We went to Croatia. But, Slovenia was so close, so our next stop Ljubljana. Croatia and Slovenia are neighbors and basically speak the same language.

Leaving Zagreb, it was two and a half hours to the capital, Ljubljana. The Old Town in Ljubljana is one of the few centers in Europe that is car free leaving pedestrians the freedom to explore. The Ljubljana River with its tree lined riverside walks accentuates the beauty of the Town Center. We crossed over the Dragon Bridge on the Ljubljana River to the Central Market and its colorful assortment of produce.

Just beyond the Market is the funicular or cable car that transports us to the Ljubljana Castle. Rising high above the town, the views are as stupendous as the castle. Originally a medieval fortress, the renovations in the 1960s have created a contemporary cultural center with art galleries, restaurants and tourist shops. The main building retains the historical towers, prison and chapel from the 1500s.

Two nights were not enough. Slovenia is one country I would definitely return to for several reasons. One, no time for  Lake Bled, which contains the only island in Slovenia. Another, the Postojna Caves and the medieval Predjama Castle look incredible. Beyond the sights, this country also boasts an incredible record  environmentally. It was named The World’s First Green Country in 2016 and has received recognition for its ecology and sustainablility.

Where to Stay: We stayed at Asteria Ljubljana, charming and located a 10 minute walk from the Town Center.

Where to Eat: Scenically located next to the Ljubljana River, Most (meaning bridge) Restaurant was perfect. We began our tradition of ordering the truffle pasta and this one scored high. The roasted veal and Croatian wine rounded out our lovely stay in Loo Blee aa Nuh.
